Edition #33 weekly newsletter

INSPIRING QUOTES

WEEKLY ARTICLES

Renewing Medium’s focus

Our vision, when we started in 2012, was ambitious: To build a platform that defined a new model for media on the internet. The problem, as we saw it, was that the incentives driving the creation and spread of content were not serving the people consuming it or creating it — or society as a whole. As I wrote at the time, “The current system causes increasing amounts of misinformation…and pressure to put out more content more cheaply — depth, originality, or quality be damned. It’s unsustainable and unsatisfying for producers and consumers alike….We need a new model.”

To continue on this trajectory put us at risk — even if we were successful, business-wise — of becoming an extension of a broken system.Upon further reflection, it’s clear that the broken system is ad-driven media on the internet. It simply doesn’t serve people.

We believe people who write and share ideas should be rewarded on their ability to enlighten and inform, not simply their ability to attract a few seconds of attention.

Webelieve that a better system — one that serves people — is possible. In fact, it’s imperative.

Five New Resolutions for PMs in 2017

We need to be constantly asking ourselves how the feature is going to benefit the user, how the design is going to enable the user, how we’re giving enough feedback for the user to know what’s going on, how we can position the product to be most attractive to the user.

Inside Amazon’s clickworker platform: How half a million people are being paid pennies to train AI

A common technique for teaching AI systems to perform these tricky tasks is by training them using a very large number of labeled examples. These machine learning systems are fed huge amounts of data, which has been annotated to highlight the features of interest. These examples might be photos labeled to indicate whether they contain a dog or written sentences that have footnotes to indicate whether the word “bass” relates to music or a fish.

This process of teaching a machine by example is called supervised learning and the role of labeling these examples is commonly carried out by Turkers and other online workers.

Microsoft’s Bishop said that in the near-future, AI systems will likely be trained using a mix of human-led

“We are able to, for better and for worse, break up jobs that use to be full-time occupations and turn them into work that can be done 24×7 by a range of people in different time zones, in different locations,” she said.

WEEKLY MUSIC

Chiristmas Lights

Christmas night, Another fight, Tears we cried, A flood Got all kinds of poison in, of poison in my blood

I took my feet To Oxford Street, Trying to right a wrong “Just walk away,” those windows say, but I can’t believe she’s gone.

When you’re still waiting for the snow to fall It doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all

Up above candles on air flicker Oh they flicker and they flow And I am up here holding on to all those chandeliers of hope

And like some drunken Elvis singing I go singing out of tune Singing how I’ve always loved you, darling, and I always will

Oh when you’re still waiting for the snow to fall It doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all Still waiting for the snow to fall It doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all

Those Christmas lights light up the street Down where the sea and city meet May all your troubles soon be gone Oh Christmas lights, keep shining on

Those Christmas lights light up the street Maybe they’ll bring her back to me Then all my troubles will be gone Oh Christmas lights, keep shining on
