Ants and Aliens

而pm就是这个科技世界的小小蚂蚁:产品的推进速度是feature by feature, sprint by sprint, day by day的,但忽略了世界的转动,我们很容易变的短视。

The same goes for technological progress. In our industry, product managers are the tiniest of ants. Our reference frame is day-by-day, sprint-by-sprint, feature-by-feature. What’s happening today, tomorrow, next month?

We can easily become myopic to the pace of technology and to the larger forces that will ultimately have more influence whether our product succeeds or fails more than which feature comes next.

In each of these examples, the companies were acutely aware of the threat posed by the new technology. In fact, they were often the first to see it—Kodak invented digital photography, and RIM brought the first smartphones to market. What they were wrong about, however, was just how fast the technology was moving. They had the wrong frame of reference.

We want to think about the external forces that will shape the feature, not the features derived from them. This is also about forecasting, not predicting.

He uses the handy acronym STEEP—Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, and Political. They’re a helpful way to compensate for the blind spots we have in tech—when was the last time you considered how climate change or population growth could shape your product’s future?

Photos: How Tools Start a Revolution

Sometimes we underestimate the impact of something new in a commonly used tool, and as a technologist that can prove to be a fairly fatal mistake.

The Hive is the New Network

The high frequency of interaction gets everyone on the same page and working in sync

With the hive, a higher frequency of interactions means that work can be assigned on an ad-hoc basis with a tool for real-time chat like Slack.

The net result is a vastly smarter organization aligned around shared goals. With more interaction between workers and tools, a business can transform from solid to fluid depending on the needs of the hive.

With WeChat, we see the evolution of a consumer product through the three stages of want, need and utility to the hive. At each stage, WeChat focuses on reducing friction by providing infrastructure for users. On WeChat, all it takes is a critical mass of people adopting new behavior to turn it into a utility that benefits the whole hive.

WEEKLY APP

The Great Suspender
