An integrated perspective on the future of mobility

Predicting the future is perilous. In this case, however, two factors point us in this direction. First, several key mobility trends—electrification, shared mobility, and autonomy—are poised to take off.

For the near future in cities leading the advance, we envision three mobility trajectories, with trends such as sharing, autonomous driving, and electrification all moving forward at a different pace. Each is suited to a specific type of metropolitan area, whether it be a dense developed city, a suburban sprawl, or an emerging metropolis.

In cities from Tokyo to Vancouver, the reality ofchanging mobility is already apparent. More shifts are coming. These changes will allow people to travel more efficiently, more cheaply, more often, and in different ways. But the future is not set, and there is a strong role for the public and private sectors to help avoid pitfalls associated with increased congestion, air-quality concerns, and other potential negative outcomes.

Why does this matter? Because getting mobility right could be a significant competitive advantage for cities. This shift can help clear the air of pollution and reduce traffic deaths. It is an opportunity to improve the quality of life—day in, day out—for billions of people.

What Can You Remove From Your Product?

Unfortunately, the feature we launched interested less than 2% of the current user base. A few weeks after the launch, I wondered to myself whether we should pull the feature. On one hand, a few hundred users benefited from our hard work.On the other hand, we had introduced new complexity for the other hundreds of thousands of users.

Each of those filters has to be considered in combination with the others, creating an explosive combinatorial effect. A new filtering type that benefits only a small fraction of the population must be considered for every subsequent change in other filters or each incremental filter.

Removing the features that don’t meet that criteria ensure product development organizations can move more quickly, reduce their product debt, and deliver to their users a more perfect experience, in which nothing else can be taken away.

2017 will be the year of interactive email

In China, native mobile apps never took off the same way they did here. Instead, developers build rich applications inside their instant messaging apps like WeChat. No need to download a new app — just add them as you would a contact in messenger.

What most people don’t realize is that CSS3 does allow for basic interactions, like switching tabs, without any JavaScript at all. Mark Robbins of RebelMail describes a technique called ‘Punch Card Coding’ that uses CSS alone to allow users to click buttons that change what they see on screen, essentially by having every permutation as a different ‘tab’.

The WeChat of the West has been sitting under our very noses. It’s email.

Your brilliant Kickstarter idea could be on sale in China before you’ve even finished funding it

Many of the factories involved in these fragmented supply chains were small, family-owned entities operating without government approval. As they worked together, they realized they could do more than just supply parts that ended up in name-brand hardware.

They banded together, at times sharing the recipes for specific electronic devices on online message boards. Thus began the shanzhai phenomenon, a word that literally means “mountain fortress,” but came to stand for products that skirt existing intellectual property laws.

Much like how programmers will freely share code for others to improve upon, Shenzhen manufacturers now see hardware and product design as something that can be borrowed freely and altered.

WEEKLY PRODUCT

Coupons at checkout
